Troop SC-1801 Hits the Trail at Cheraw State Park

There’s something different that happens when a group of boys trades screens for the outdoors. This past weekend, Troop SC-1801 did just that—packing up gear, leaving behind the noise of everyday life, and heading out to Cheraw State Park for a true back-to-basics adventure.

And we didn’t just camp—we went primitive.

Back to the Basics

Our troop set up camp in the park’s primitive group area, tucked near the shores of Lake Juniper. With no modern distractions and only the essentials, the boys experienced what camping was meant to be—teamwork, responsibility, and a whole lot of dirt. Tents went up, fires were built, and before long, the campsite came to life. There’s something about cooking over a fire and sleeping under the stars that brings out both independence and camaraderie. (South Carolina Parks)

Hitting the Trails

With over 9 miles of trails winding through the park, there was no shortage of ground to cover. From towering pines to quiet stretches along the lake, every step brought something new. Along the way, the troop encountered wildlife, navigated terrain together, and learned the value of perseverance. Whether it was pushing through tired legs or helping a fellow trailman carry gear, the hike was about more than distance—it was about character. (AllTrails.com)

Kayaks, Casts, and Lake Juniper

Of course, no trip to Cheraw is complete without time on the water.

Lake Juniper, a beautiful 360-acre lake at the heart of the park, gave the troop the perfect setting for kayaking and fishing. Some boys took to kayaks, paddling through calm waters and exploring the cypress-lined edges of the lake. Others cast their lines, hoping to land bass or bream—and more than a few stories (some true, some… slightly exaggerated) came back to camp that evening. Out on the water, confidence grows quickly. For many, it was a chance to try something new. For others, it was a chance to improve skills. For all, it was unforgettable. (Lake.com)

More Than a Campout

Trips like this are what Trail Life is all about.

It’s not just camping—it’s building men. It’s learning resilience, developing leadership, and discovering God’s creation firsthand. Away from distractions, the boys had space to think, to grow, and to connect—with each other and with something bigger than themselves. By the time we packed up camp, tired and a little muddy, there was a shared understanding: this is what adventure looks like.

And this is just the beginning.
