Heritage Branch: Exploring Our Roots
At Trail Life Troop SC-1801, our recent focus on the Heritage Branch has been a meaningful journey into understanding who we are, where we come from, and the values that guide us forward. This branch invites Trailmen to explore three essential pillars: American Heritage, Christian Heritage, and their own family heritage—all with the goal of honoring and upholding the traditions passed down from those who came before us.
Throughout this experience, our Trailmen engaged with several key topics, each offering a unique perspective on heritage and responsibility.
We began with Christian Heritage Step, where Trailmen explored the history of Christianity as documented in the Bible. This wasn’t just about learning facts—it was about connecting those teachings to everyday life. The boys took a deep dive into learning about each of the 12 disciples and Paul. Through this teaching, they were encouraged to think how they can be more like the disciples in today’s culture.
Next, we turned our attention to Flag Etiquette and History Step, a powerful reminder of respect and patriotism. Trailmen learned the story behind the United States flag, the proper ways to display and honor it, and how to fold the flag. Through this, they gained a deeper appreciation for what the flag represents and the responsibility that comes with it.
Our study of the Founding Fathers Step brought history to life. The boys examined the courage, vision, and sacrifices of the men who led the American Revolution and helped establish our nation’s foundation through the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Federal Papers. Understanding their motives and risks helped our Trailmen better appreciate the freedoms we enjoy today.
The My Family Step brought the focus closer to home. Trailmen explored the diversity of family structures within their patrols and reflected on their own roles within their families. This step reinforced the importance of family as a foundational unit and encouraged each boy to recognize the value of his contributions at home.
In Early America Step, the boys stepped back in time to examine life before the United States was formed. They discovered the challenges faced by early settlers, the motivations behind their journeys, and how the local Native Tribes made weapons and helped the early settlers. This exploration fostered gratitude for modern conveniences and respect for the perseverance of those who came before us.
Finally, the Armed Forces Step introduced Trailmen to the six branches of the United States military, with guest speakers from four major branches. The Trailman enjoyed a zoom call with a Mr. Anderson, who is currently deployed for the U.S. Army. On the zoom call, Mr. Anderson showed the Trailmen his tactical gear, uniform, and other fun military equipment. Following the zoom call we had three in person guests. Dave, our Chaplin, shared his time as an Air Force Medic during the Gulf War. Joel, Marine Veteran, shared about his deployment during the Iraqi War and his heroic rescue from behind enemy lines. Tom, Navy Veteran, discussed his time as a soldier on an Aircraft Carrier during the Vietnam War. The Trailmen learned about the unique roles and responsibilities of each veteran and gained an understanding of the sacrifices they made for us.
The Heritage Branch has been more than just a set of lessons—it has been an opportunity for our Trailmen to grow in knowledge, character, and appreciation for the legacy they are a part of. By exploring faith, country, and family, they are better equipped to carry forward the values that define strong leaders and responsible citizens.
